Clarke determined to lead Scotland to a World Cup

Scotland manager Steve Clarke said on Tuesday he did not consider quitting after Euro 2024 as he aims to lead his country to a first World Cup in 28 years.

Clarke ended Scotland's long wait to reach any major tournament since the 1998 World Cup by qualifying for Euro 2020 and 2024.

However, his side bowed out both times at the group stage and his judgement was questioned after Scotland managed just one point from three games against Germany, Switzerland and Hungary in June.

"I've always said I'd love to go to a World Cup with my country," said Clarke as he announced his squad for next month's Nations League fixtures against Poland and Portugal.

"I've got a group of players that are determined to go to a World Cup with their country, and for some of them it will be their last chance. There's your motivation there."

Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Ryan Gauld is the major new inclusion in the squad, 10 years after his first international call-up.

Liverpool's Ben Doak is also aiming to make his senior international debut after withdrawing from the provisional Euros squad due to injury.
