Jenny Simpson, an Olympic bronze medallist and former 1,500m world champion, was hospitalized after she collapsed at an athletics event in North Carolina on Tuesday, organizers said.

The Sir Walter Running Group said in a post on Instagram on Wednesday that there was a "medical incident" involving Simpson as she paced a mile group at the Pop Up Miles event in Raleigh.

"Jenny is receiving excellent medical care," the group said.

Runner's World and LetsRun reported that Simpson was without a pulse for a period for a time but that it was restored with CPR and an automated external defibrillator before she was taken to hospital.

"We are incredibly grateful to the individuals who responded immediately, as well as (Emergency Medical Services) and the medical professionals who handled the situation with such care, urgency, and professionalism," Sir Walter Running said.

Simpson, 39, won 1,500m bronze at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. She won the 1,500m world title in 2011.
