Leverkusen sign Portuguese talent Moreira from Lyon

Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday announced the signing of Portuguese winger Afonso Moreira from Lyon until 2031 for a reported transfer fee of 30 million euros ($34 million) plus bonuses.

"From the first conversation, I had the feeling that this club was an excellent fit for my sporting ambitions," the 21-year-old said in a statement.

Moreira arrived at Lyon a two-million-euro deal from Sporting one season ago and scored eight goals while laying on 11 assists in 37 competitive matches with the Ligue 1 club.

"Afonso Moreira is a fast, agile, and skillful attacker with good finishing ability and an excellent eye for finding teammates," sporting director Simon Rolfes said.

"His pace and high-intensity style of play fit our team perfectly. With Afonso, we are gaining additional attacking power and creativity."

German media reported Thursday that Moreira was new coach Carles Martinez Novell's top transfer target. Martinez Novell arrived from Ligue 1 side Toulouse earlier in June.
