LA28 Olympics torch relay to visit all 50 states
The torch relay ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 will pass through all 50 US states for the first time, starting with Georgia, organizers said Tuesday.
The route will begin in Atlanta -- the most recent US city to host a Summer Olympics, back in 1996 -- before finishing in California.
"Every Olympic Games begins with a single flame, and carrying that flame to Los Angeles is an honor and privilege that we'll share with every corner of the country, as Americans in all 50 states carry the flame on its path to our Opening Ceremony," said LA28 president Casey Wasserman.
Full details of the route, which will begin in spring of 2028, are still being planned and will be unveiled next year.
As is tradition, the Olympic flame will first be lit in Olympia, Greece --- the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games.
It will then be flown to Atlanta, before beginning its epic American road trip. The LA28 Olympic Games will run from July 14-30.
In 1996, the torch visited 42 states, and memorably went to space aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. For the 1984 Los Angeles Games, the relay toured 33 states.
