Italian biathlete Passler suspended after pre-Olympics doping test

Italian biathlete Rebecca Passler has failed a doping test and was on Monday provisionally suspended from competing at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

The 24-year-old's sample showed the presence of letrozole, a drug used to treat breast cancer, the Italian anti-doping agency (NADO Italia) said in a statement.

It was detected in an out-of-competition test which fell outside the official Games testing window.

Passler currently stands 33rd in the overall World Cup standings.

The niece of Johann Passler, an Olympic bronze medallist at the 1988 Calgary Games, she would have been competing in her home town of Anterselva at the Milan-Cortina Games.

The Winter Olympics opening ceremony takes place on Friday.
