Portugal Colonial - Pittsburgh Speed Painter Surprises Jalen Brunson With 10-Minute Portrait

Pittsburgh artist Cody Sabol has added New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson to a growing list of prominent athletes and entertainers he has painted in rapid live performances.

Sabol created a large portrait of Brunson in approximately 10 minutes, working from memory and using his fingers rather than conventional brushes to apply oil paint to the canvas. The image depicted Brunson in a prayer pose.

Video of the session captured Brunson watching the portrait develop and reacting with surprise as the recognizable image emerged from broad, fast strokes. After the work was completed, Brunson autographed the canvas.

The performance is part of a distinctive approach that has brought Sabol widespread attention online. He specializes in producing recognizable portraits within a tightly limited period, turning the painting process itself into a live event rather than simply presenting a finished work.

Sabol attended Kentucky Christian University and had previously considered a path toward youth ministry before his artistic career developed. His speed-painting work has since placed him in front of well-known figures from sports and entertainment.

Among the subjects he has painted are baseball star Aaron Judge, footballer Lionel Messi and country music figure Dolly Parton. The combination of speed, scale and the use of his hands has become a defining feature of his public performances.

The Brunson portrait attracted attention on social media both for the short completion time and for Sabol's ability to capture the basketball player's likeness without slowly building the image through conventional portrait techniques.

Brunson's reaction became a central part of the widely shared moment. The Knicks star initially watched the process without knowing exactly how the final image would look, then responded enthusiastically when the portrait was revealed.

By having Brunson sign the completed canvas, the encounter also turned the work into a collaboration of sorts between artist and subject, combining Sabol's live painting with an autograph from the player portrayed.

The latest performance reinforces Sabol's growing reputation for creating celebrity portraits under severe time constraints and using the reveal, as well as the painting itself, to engage audiences in person and online.
