Welshman Thomas out of Tour of Switzerland as 'precautionary measure'

Former Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas has withdrawn from the rest of the Tour of Switzerland, his Ineos Grenadiers teams announced on Wednesday.

Thomas fell on the third stage of racing in Switzerland on Tuesday and complained of a dead leg afterwards, less than three weeks out from the start of this season's Tour de France.

The 39-year-old finished more than 15 minutes behind stage winner Quinn Simmons.

The Welshman will end his career this season and is set to feature on this year's Tour de France, which he won in 2018.

"Following a crash during stage three of the #TourdeSuisse, @GeraintThomas86 will not take the start today as a precautionary measure," Ineos said on social media.

The eight-day Tour of Switzerland is the final significant stage race before the start of the Tour de France on July 5 in Lille.
